Staging Liminality: A Productive Hybridity on Orford Ness

‘Staging Liminality: A Productive Hybridity on Orford Ness’ 2022

The project set out to explore the ways in which effective cultural hybridisation can mobilize direct forms of productive ecological and societal change. The construction of a Japanese Noh theatre is proposed on the site of the recently demolished lighthouse on the shingle spit of Orford Ness. The scheme uses reconstruction as a ritually resilient to act alongside this dynamic landscape of coastal erosion. These rituals of construction are superimposed within a wider shingle restoration scheme, blurring the boundary between performance, restoration, participation and construction.
